Without libraries what do we have? We have no past and no future ~ Ray Bradbury

Not too late to wish everyone Happy New Year 2022! Let’s start off this year with a brief overview of one of our branch libraries, the Tan Sri Professor Ahmad Ibrahim Law Library (Perpustakaan Undang-Undang Tan Sri Profesor Ahmad Ibrahim).

Since its inception in 1959, the Central Library had begun acquiring legal materials and these were incorporated into the general collection together with texts of other disciplines. However, with the setting up of the Faculty of Law in 1972, which happens to be the first law school in the country, legal resources were shifted to the newly erected Law Library situated adjacent to the Law School.

Entrance/Exit of Law Library

On 18 June 1999, the Law Library was named as Tan Sri Professor Ahmad Ibrahim Law Library (Perpustakaan Undang-Undang Tan Sri Profesor Ahmad Ibrahim) in appreciation of his contributions to the Faculty of Law and the Law Library University of Malaya.

The building consists of 4 floors; Ground Floor, 1st Floor, 2nd Floor, 3rd Floor and Mezzanine Floor. Textbooks or books found in the subject syllabus offered by the Law Faculty, are available on the Ground Floor. The first floor houses its reference collection which can be used within the library only. The reference collection consists of reference items such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, guide books, Halsbury’s, digests, maxims, handbooks, yearbooks, abstracts, citators, and indexes. Commonwealth & Non-Commonwealth Reports Collection, which are available on the 1st Floor consists of court cases in various jurisdictions, namely India, Pakistan, Australia, United Kingdom and United States.

On the 2nd Floor are the Media Collection which includes the Law Library’s research collections in audio and video cassette and CD-ROMs formats as well as the Closed Access Collection. These are theses, dissertations, research projects, academic exercises, unpublished conference papers and loose leaf.
